SpaceXAI hired Qualcomm to build the ground floor of a phone carrier. Anthropic posted a $17B quarter and a warning about AI that builds AI. OpenAI trimmed its round and stacked its bench. Zipline raised $1.5B and signed up for 300 more Walmart sites. Kalshi picked up another state lawsuit. Saronic put a second Marauder in the water. Kraken went shopping in DeFi. And Scott Galloway called Elon a traitor. We have thoughts.

A LOT to unpack this week.

Let’s get into it.

🛰️ SpaceXAI: Starlink Wants Your Phone Bill

SpaceX picked Qualcomm to supply the terrestrial base stations for Starlink Mobile, its planned nationwide satellite-plus-ground network. The radios are Dragonwing QRU100 Massive MIMO units with 64 transmit and 64 receive paths, paired with QDU100 baseband. Rollout starts in 2027, with tens of thousands of US base stations over a multi-year deal. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said revenue starts late in fiscal 2027, with the real money in fiscal 2028. It lands on top of SpaceX's EchoStar spectrum buy and early talks to acquire Boost Mobile. Satellites cover the empty map. Towers cover the cities. SpaceX wants both.

🧠 Anthropic: A $17B Quarter, Fine Print Included

The amended S-1 shows Q3 revenue of $16.96B, up 1,127% year over year and 47% from Q2's $11.6B. It also shows a $567M operating loss, versus $974M of operating income last quarter, which Anthropic pins on $5.0B of pricier short-term compute and a $2.0B non-cash donation-matching charge. Net loss was $23.3B, mostly a $21.9B non-cash markup on convertibles and SAFEs. Cash sits at $95.6B. Ticker: ANT on Nasdaq. Then the risk factors: Anthropic says it may imminently meet its own threshold for "dramatically accelerated progress attributable to AI." No current model crosses it yet. The revenue line gets the headlines. The risk factors deserve them.

🤖 OpenAI: Smaller Check, Bigger Bench

OpenAI cut its round target to up to $20B from about $30B, at a $1.25T post-money valuation per the FT, with roughly $11B reportedly committed so far. UAE investors and Coatue lead, and OpenAI plans to pitch family offices and wealthy individuals next. The org chart moved faster than the cap table. Uber President Jill Hazelbaker is joining as chief corporate affairs officer, and former Army Secretary Dan Driscoll signed on as Senior Counselor for National Security Modernization. Even the biggest name in private AI is negotiating size now. Family offices just got invited to the table.

⚖️ Kalshi: Another State, Another Suit

Arkansas sued Kalshi this week, with Attorney General Tim Griffin calling it a "pocket-sized bookie" and seeking restitution under the state's deceptive trade practices law. That follows Utah's 14 criminal charges against Kalshi and co-founders Tarek Mansour and Luana Lopes Lara. Arizona, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Michigan and Nevada have also charged, sued or restricted access. Kalshi's position hasn't changed: its contracts are derivatives regulated by the CFTC, not gambling. The CFTC agrees, and has sued Utah to prove it. Fifty states, one regulator. Preemption is the whole ballgame.

🚢 Saronic: Marauder Number Two

The second Marauder is in the water and running under its own power out of Saronic's Franklin, Louisiana yard. It took 8% fewer labor hours to build than the first. "When we took over this shipyard it was shutting down and capacity was trending towards 0. Today, it is active again + expanding," the company said. At full capacity the yard builds 20 Marauders a year. Each one is 55 meters long, hauls up to 150 metric tons, and runs 5,400 nautical miles with a standard 25-ton payload. Hull two was cheaper than hull one. That is the entire game in shipbuilding.

🐙 Kraken: Buying Into DeFi

Kraken parent Payward and its clients bought AAVE tokens on the secondary market through a Payward-affiliated fund, size undisclosed, and said more purchases may follow. The two sides are also exploring a closer partnership. Back in June, talks included 250,000 AAVE and a 15% equity stake in Aave Group at a $385M valuation. This announcement skips the equity. Aave holds about $33B in net deposits and $11B in active loans. Add Bitnomial and Reap, and Payward is assembling trading, banking, asset management and infrastructure under one roof. Kraken is building a bank. It's just not calling it one.

🚁 Zipline: $21.5B and 300 Walmart Sites

Zipline raised $1.5B at a $21.5B valuation, led by Paradigm, WCM Investment Management and Layer Global, with Valor, Fidelity, Uber, Tiger Global, J.P. Morgan, ARK Invest and Salesforce Ventures in. Same day, a new multi-year Walmart deal adds 300 drone delivery sites across the US, up from 21 active today. The money goes to US manufacturing and hiring for a nationwide network. Home delivery drones carry up to eight pounds within a 10-mile radius. Drone delivery just got a real estate footprint.

👀 Watch List

🛩️ Shield AI: X-BAT Leaves the Shop

The first full-scale X-BAT prototype is done, one year after the design reveal, and is headed from Frisco, Texas to Shield's flight test site in Newton, Kansas. Testing starts with engine runs while horizontal on the launch and recovery vehicle, then vertical, then hanging from a crane, then untethered. The target is a missionized flight in 2028 and production in 2029. Shield pitches it as twice the size of the Air Force's Increment 1 CCAs, with an F110 engine and thrust vectoring. One year from render to airframe. The primes should be paying attention.

We’re using this space a little differently this week. Something crossed a line, and we’d rather say it than link to it.

🧭 Pick Your Reality

This week, Scott Galloway took a shot at what he called our “ridiculous, unhealthy, and dangerous idolatry of innovators.” Fair enough, that’s a debate worth having. Then he said this: “Elon Musk is a traitor to the West. We lined up the Rosenbergs against a wall. This is a traitor to the West, and he should be held to the same standards as every other traitor in the West.”

The room applauded. (WTF?)

Read that again. A business ‘professor’ held up two people the U.S. executed in 1953 as the standard for Elon Musk.

You don’t have to like Elon. Think he posts too much. Disagree with his politics. Bet against his companies. All fair game. But comparing a living person to executed traitors, and getting applause for it, crosses a line. Somewhere along the way, disagreeing with someone turned into wishing them gone, and a lot of people stopped noticing.

So here’s what this “traitor” has been up to. He made electric cars practical at scale when most of Detroit called it a fantasy. He made rockets reusable, then used them to give America back the ability to launch its own astronauts. When hurricanes and wars knock out infrastructure, Starlink keeps people connected. And right now, paralyzed patients are communicating with loved ones after years of not being able to. If that’s betraying the West, we’d like more of it.

We’re biased, and plenty of you are right there with us as investors in his companies. If someone looks at all that and sees a traitor, we just don’t live in the same reality.

This is the vibe we’d take any day. Elon at SXSW, March 2018. Eight years later, he’s still building what he talked about on that stage. MUST LISTEN.
