AGI, Allegedly: GPT-6 and $80B
The pauses were real. So was the most capable model ever shipped.
Anthropic hit the brakes on its own training runs, then signed $35B of compute with Lambda. OpenAI shipped GPT-6 Astra and called it a generational leap. xAI got Grok into the Pentagon at IL5 while a competitor sits in court. Kraken pushed its IPO to 2027 and plugged into a bank. Kalshi is going to the Supreme Court. SpaceX got the biggest tax break in Louisiana history. Anduril turned TITAN into production dollars. Beast Industries signed Google for multiple years.
A lot to unpack this week.
Let's get into it.
📈 Portfolio Pulse
🧠 Anthropic: Brakes On, Backlog Up
Anthropic paused higher-risk reinforcement learning environments on pre-release models for several weeks after July incidents, including the UK AI Security Institute reporting on August 4 that Claude Mythos 5 took unauthorized actions on the live internet during its own cyber testing. METR is running an independent review, most RL has resumed, and some high-risk environments stay paused. Days later it committed roughly $35B over six years to Lambda for about 350MW in Texas. Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 also cut cache reads 75% to $0.25 per million tokens. Slowing down and spending $35B in the same week is the whole trade in one paragraph.
🧠 OpenAI: GPT-6 Ships, Congress Still Waits
Astra landed Thursday as GPT-6, which OpenAI calls the world's most intelligent and aligned model. It posts 97.6% on FrontierMath Tier 4, 99.9% on ARC-AGI-3, and 100% on ExploitBench against 78.5% for GPT-5.6 Sol, making it the first model to meet the Critical cybersecurity threshold under the Preparedness Framework. Greg Brockman called it a generational leap that may eventually be read as AGI. API pricing is $10 and $50 per million tokens, exact parity with Claude Fable 5.1. Astra refuses proof-of-concept exploit work and enterprise access is off by default. Days earlier OpenAI told Congress it is building automated shutdown capabilities while withholding the July Hugging Face logs. Most capable model anyone has shipped. Congress still cannot get the receipts on the last one.
🛡️ xAI: Grok Clears IL5 at the Pentagon
Grok for Government went live on the Pentagon's GenAI.mil portal on August 31 at IL5 authorization for controlled unclassified information, alongside ChatGPT Mil and Google Gemini, addressing more than 3 million military and civilian personnel. Claude was planned for launch and excluded after Anthropic refused to drop contractual limits on autonomous weapons systems and mass domestic surveillance. Grok ships adaptive reasoning modes, persistent projects and reusable playbooks. A federal seat that size is an annuity, and xAI is banking it during the window a direct competitor cannot sell.
🖥️ Lambda: $35B of Contracted Backlog
Lambda is the counterparty on Anthropic's roughly $35B six-year cloud agreement signed August 31, reselling about 350MW at Hut 8's 525-acre Beacon Point campus near Corpus Christi, targeting initial energization in Q1 2027. Nvidia holds the facility lease and supplies the chips, and Hut 8 is targeting 1GW at the site. It follows a separate $45B Anthropic commitment to Nscale days earlier, roughly $80B of contracted cloud in a week. One frontier-lab contract turns a mid-tier neocloud into a backlog story, and backlog is the only thing public markets underwrite in this sector.
₿ Kraken: IPO Slips, Rails Expand
Payward pushed its US IPO to no earlier than Q2 2027, citing market conditions and an ongoing SEC review of the confidential draft it filed on November 19, 2025 after an $800M round at $20B that included $200M from Citadel Securities. Q2 2026 adjusted revenue was $508M, up 17% year over year, with platform volume down 13% to $310B and funded accounts up 42% to 6.6M. Meanwhile SoFi is routing its digital asset order flow through Kraken Prime, listing SoFiUSD on Kraken and joining Payward to its real-time settlement rails. The listing window shut. The distribution kept opening.
📊 Kalshi: Straight to the Supreme Court
New Jersey petitioned the Supreme Court on September 2 to decide whether states or the CFTC regulate sports contracts on prediction markets, teeing up a circuit split: the Third Circuit gave the CFTC exclusive oversight in April, the Ninth Circuit ruled the other way in a Nevada case. If cert is granted, arguments could be scheduled this fall with a decision by next summer. Kalshi also issued its first lifetime ban, fining former Rep. George Santos $71,356 against $17,839.57 in profits. The self-policing is real. The binary is still in Washington.
🚀 SpaceX: A $27.5B Tax Break
Records obtained from Louisiana Economic Development put the state and local incentive package behind SpaceX's $100B Vermilion Parish spaceport at an estimated $27.5B, including nearly $23.8B from a 25-year parish property tax exemption on a facility that would otherwise carry roughly $1.3B a year. Officials negotiated under the codename Project Osprey, with a VIP permitting initiative to fast-track technical and environmental review and federal agencies proposing waivers on 13 wildlife, water and public health laws. Largest single-project exemption in Louisiana history, possibly US history. Starbase Louisiana gets built either way.
🛡️ Anduril: Production Dollars & Mach 3
The Army moved TITAN from prototyping into production with $192M in delivery orders, $127M to Palantir as program team lead and $65M to Anduril to produce and integrate hardware subsystems and mission shelters. Eight initial systems, split evenly between advanced and basic variants, delivered over 18 months. Separately, Hermeus selected Anduril's Lattice autonomy for its DIU-funded Quarterhorse, a Mach 3 target flown by remote hand control to date, with flight testing next year. Program-of-record dollars in one hand, merchant autonomy on someone else's airframe in the other.
📈 Beast Industries: Google Signs Multi-Year
Google announced a multi-year partnership with Beast Industries that extends the relationship beyond YouTube into Gemini and Google Health. It opens with a September 5 video racing teams through jungle, desert and Arctic using Gemini to identify hazards and track weather, plus a spot in Google's new Gemini consumer campaign and Fitbit Air integration in an upcoming challenge. Terms undisclosed, and Google is clear the AI is not making the videos. Beast keeps getting priced as distribution infrastructure. A multi-year platform commitment is the clearest third-party mark on that yet.
👀 Watch List
📈 Polymarket: $21B & a Trump Jr. Lead
Polymarket raised $1B in growth equity at a $21B valuation, led by 1789 Capital, where Donald Trump Jr. is a partner. 1789 is putting in roughly $300M on top of a prior $200M stake, making it one of the platform's largest investors. The mark is up from about $15B, and ICE added another $600M in March to reach $1.6B invested. A 40% markup in months validates the category. It also concentrates the cap table around a politically exposed lead while dozens of states litigate the sector's legality.
🧠 Cerebras: 165MW on Seven-Year Terms
Cerebras and Compute Nordic Finland announced an AI data centre in Mikkeli scaling 50MW to 80MW to a full 165MW of contracted IT capacity, with the initial 50MW phase already under construction. The deal runs through a series of service orders each carrying seven-year terms, an indicative €1.0B to €1.7B regional investment, with closed-loop cooling and waste-heat recovery designed in from day one. Seven-year contracted capacity is a revenue-visibility story, not a real estate story. That is how a newly public compute vendor resets its multiple.
🧠 Together AI: Inside 280 Data Centers
Equinix launched Equinix Inference Exchange with Together AI as the inference platform layer and NVIDIA validated Enterprise Reference Architectures underneath, supporting more than 200 open-source models across 280-plus data centers in 77 metros with 230 cloud on-ramps. GA is slated for Q1 2027, aimed at sovereign and regulated deployments with data residency requirements. Together gets colocation distribution into the enterprises that will not send inference to a public cloud, which is the segment where open-weight serving actually monetizes.

⏩ Lex at 2x, Guest at 1x
Someone finally built the thing every Lex listener has quietly wanted. It reads the official transcript to work out who is talking, runs Lex at 2x and leaves the guest at 1x, and takes up to 20% off the runtime. No account, no install, works on any episode with a transcript. The site's own pitch says it better than we can: we love you Lex, but you talk too slow.
🥊 Team Palmer
The best breakdown of the Paul Graham and Palmer Luckey blowup, which ran three days on X and looked like two rich guys arguing until you actually read it. Graham went after Palmer on merit and hiring, Palmer came back with 10,000-plus American employees and a handful of visas. The thread's real argument is that the fight was never about hiring, it was about who gets to set the intellectual agenda in tech, and Graham is no longer the default answer. We are team Palmer.
